Netbook Version Of Ubuntu

Ubuntu Netbook Edition was an operating system created both by Canonical Ltd. and the Ubuntu Foundation. This software provides extensive utilities optimized for netbooks. With this, users can access features that are only available at Ubuntu.

Optimized For Smaller Netbooks

Ubuntu Netbook Edition (UNE) or Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) was created for enabling smaller computers to run Ubuntu. It is a special operating system released along with Ubuntu version 8.04 or “Hardy Heron” on April 24, 2008. Some netbooks with a smaller display low-end CPU or low-battery life might not operate smoothly if installed with Ubuntu. There were some notebooks preinstalled with Ubuntu Netbook Edition, such as Acer Aspire One, Asus Eee PC, Dell Inspiron Mini 10v, and Toshiba NB100. Later versions of Ubuntu Netbook Edition, particularly version 10.10, utilized the Unity desktop for its desktop interface. Users have the choice of switching to the classic interface from its software repositories. The main advantage of the Unity graphical shell is that it fits with any display size while retaining functionality. Ubuntu 11.04 merged the desktop and netbook edition, because of both of them having the same Unity interface.

The operating system gives a simplified and optimized Ubuntu environment for low-end netbooks. Its specially-prepared interface is made to accommodate small netbook screens. Users can still open Ubuntu apps and options on their netbook easily. It has the module applications as well as Ubuntu configurations enabling access to open source apps like Ubuntu Software Centre, Rhythmbox media player, Evolution e-mail clients, Empathy instant messenger, and GIMP media editor Open Office.  It even lets users access PC games optimized for Ubuntu. There are no taskbars on the bottom screen, and each app is placed on the Launcher, the main hub located on the left corner of the screen. Users can pin the open application on the Launcher. The apps’ menu bar is placed above the screen to maximize vertical resolution.

Small But Functional

Ubuntu Netbook Edition is a decent alternative operating system for netbooks. It maximizes the small screen space and specs of netbooks. Users can still be productive, even working on a compact operating system and machine.

PROS

  • Run Ubuntu apps on netbooks
  • Optimizes netbooks screen space
  • Launcher hub

CONS

  • Has been discontinued
  • The interface can be confusing
  • Cannot modify the screen
